Good vs. Best

"And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose." (Rom 8:28)
This verse used to be one of those verses, that you memorize and hear a million times and then it no longer has a meaning. You can recite it forwards and backwards. Kinda like John 3:16. We can rattle off the words like a machine gun to get to the next verse. It's kinda cool that God has a way of making things in His Word come alive and relevant.
There's a saying in the ministry I work at: "The enemy of the best is the good". Opportunities or decisions aren't always cut and dry, black and white. Some things aren't bad but they get in the way of what is best. For example, deciding between homework or a movie (faced that several times when I was in highschool), spending time with a friend who needs an ear rather than me dumping on them, or simply getting enough rest rather than staying up til 11 (something I still get to work on).
I found myself thinking about the "best" over the Easter weekend. John Piper's challenge to "really believe" what we say we believe was driven home again. Do I really believe that God has my best in mind (and not only my best but the people around me, the people I care about)? I was thinking about some things I wanted, and I felt like God said to me, "This isn't My best for you..." I was like "Awe man" but at the same time it's something to stand on. I know I am in God's will ("for those who love God and are called according to His purpose") and I can stand on this: He has my best in mind and where He has me now is His best - where I work, what I'm involved in, etc. A good reminder, and a lot of help.
