When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." (John 8:12)
Something cool that our pastor pointed out, and I connected the dots to:
When Jesus made this statement in the temple, it was during the Feast of Tabernacles. This feast helped Israel to remember their journey in the wilderness. Two lighted candelabra served as a symbol of how God guided them with a cloud and fire. When the cloud/fire stopped, they stopped. When it moved, they pulled up their tentpegs and got moving after it.
It struck me that they didn't have advance warning when they were going to stop or move on. They probably had to watch the cloud/fire closely in order to know when God began to move. In my life, how often I want to know two weeks in advance the events that are going to happen tomorrow. But I am to follow Jesus, the Light. I won't have advance warning much of the time. But I need to be ready, and have a flexible spirit.
