I just finished speed reading Through Gates of Splendor by Elizabeth Elliot. I had a vague idea about the story of five missionaries martyred in Ecuador, but to read it and especially excerpts from their diaries was challenging. Even in ministry it's so easy to get comfortable and in a rut. Their lives were radically committed to God and the spreading of His Gospel. Although I am used to hearing stories of missionaries being willing to give up everything for God, this excerpt from Jim Elliot's diary was a timely reminder of what it's all about:
"...Oh, the fullness, pleasure, sheer excitement of knowing God on earth! I care not if I never raise my voice again for Him, if only I may love Him, please Him. Mayhap in mercy He shall give me a host of children that I may lead them through the vast star fields to explore His delicacies whose finger ends set them to burning. But if not, if only I may see Him, touch His garments, and smile into His eyes - ah then, not stars nor children shall matter, only Himself. O Jesus, Master and Center and End of all, how long before that Glory is thine which has so long waited for Thee? Now there is no thought of Thee among men; then sheer shall be thought of nothing else. Now other men are praised; then none shall care for any other's merits. Hasten, hasten, Glory of Heaven, take Thy crown, subdue Thy Kingdom, enthrall Thy creatures."

Wow. Jim Elliot's life is such an inspiration. I should read that sometime.
Wow! That is a tremendous quote. I read the book years ago and enjoyed it but didn't remember this. Very challenging and inspiring too. It seems to go with the stories that Fred shared last night too. At least the things that stood out to me about how much the hymn writers yearned for Jesus and loved Him so much.
Thanks for sharing.
